About Bill Yount

Hey, I am Bill

I am a 57-year-old practicing Emergency Physician, happily married with fraternal twin boys. I learned how to care for people’s health without learning how to care for my own money and financial well-being.

I am a late-starter who woke up to Financial Independence at 50. I lived largely a paycheck-to-paycheck existence in the rat race, on the hedonic treadmill. I spent first and saved last. I knew largely nothing about investing and personal finance. It seems like I made most mistakes in the financial book. Waking up was painful, full of what-if regrets and shame. Recovery has been hard but oh so rewarding.

My mission is to help other late starters start now and get others to start as early as possible on their individual journeys to financial independence. Money is a powerful tool and about mindset, mechanics, and life. We all deserve to live a balanced life of financial freedom and time abundance.

Let’s get there together. You can also find me at Catching up to FI and Financial Literacy Project.

If you want to read more about my story, read my blog post, “Saving Our Retirement“, on Humble Dollar.

About Jackie Cummings Koski

Hey, I am Jackie, a mom of one adult daughter, and was a  late starter that managed to catch up.

After overcoming poverty, divorce and single motherhood, I finally started waking up about my finances at the age of 38. I knew I was way behind and felt it every day for nearly a decade.

Before pulling things together financially, it took some real mindset shifts. Most of my progress to repair my money woes was at the intersection of curiosity, community and careful planning for my circumstances.

I reached financial independence about ten years later and officially retired from my corporate job at 49. I remained curious about personal finance and still had a burning passion to help others, especially those getting a late start like I did. I earned my CFP®  and AFC® credentials; and went back to school to get a master’s degree in financial planning & financial therapy from Kansas State University.

Before all that, I wrote a book titled “Money Letters 2 my Daughter”  in 2013 to share everything I was learning about money and personal finance with my daughter (a high schooler at the time). My new book, “F.I.R.E. for Dummies” was just released in April 2024.

I live by a “lift as I climb” mentality and get my smiles when I see others succeed.  I shared my story on Podcast episode #7

About Becky Heptig

Hey, I’m Becky

I am a retired wife, Mom to 3, Bebe to 5, and follower of Christ. I drifted through life not paying attention to saving or money management. It worked…until it didn’t!

My husband Stephen and I walked through a lot of pain and finally turned things around at 50 years old. After changing our mindset and habits, we went from broke at 50 to retired at 63.

Now we enjoy our family, our hobbies and traveling. Our most interesting hobby is driving race cars!

One of my passions is to help late-starters, like myself, learn how to be good stewards and managers of their money and avoid some of the pain I experienced.

You can also find me at Started At 50, Catching up to FI, or my blog www.startedat50.com
